1. Set your goals
My first top tip is an obvious one, but one that many often overlook. Set your goals and write them down. I’ve always found and that writing your goals down is the most powerful thing you can do. Committing goals to pen to paper, and displaying them clearly, often results in greater progress.
We all do very well with New Year's resolutions, yet most often forget about them come Easter. However, if you've got your goals written down and you refer to them regularly enough for review, you’re more likely to stay on track.
2. Get yourself a coach
I wouldn’t hold it against you for thinking I’m slightly bias with this, given I’m a coach, but get yourself a coach or a mentor. Somebody that you can talk through your goals and areas of improvement with and who can support in achieving them. Committing to your goals verbally with someone that can play them back to you and keep you on track is really important. It’s made a big difference to me in the past and I know it makes a big difference for people to have a dedicated person to talk to.
3. Ask for help
Something that doesn’t come naturally to a lot of people, but don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s a sign off strength and dedication to yourself. After all, no person is an island. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Find someone who’s been there and done it before, and ask for help, rather than tackling it alone.
4. Build great relationships
My fourth tip is to build great relationships. What I’ve learned over the years during my time in business and as a coach is you never know who you're going to bump into. Having a network of people around you will not only allow you to add value to other people but they will definitely add value to you.
5. Be persistent
Lastly, but by no means least, I’d say be persistent and don't give up. Mistakes will happen - things won't go to plan all the time. Life gets in the way. Maybe you don't get the the job that you went for or the interview doesn't work out quite how you wanted, but treat it as learning moment. Life is about learning and having the determination not to give up. If you’re open minded, and are willing to learn and evolve, you’ll always make progress towards your goal.
