I am the General Manager of Food and Beverage for a large function venue that holds around 1400 functions a year. I have 6 department heads that report to me with around 125 staff in total.

I got so much from it.  I was really surprised how much I got from it actually.  It can be quite isolating being in a senior position because you just don’t have anyone to talk to.  Working with Maria gave me someone to talk to, to vent my frustrations, to bounce ideas off and see if I was on the right path or if I could be doing something better.  It was a lifeline in what was a very challenging year.  As I tell my staff, I learnt more from this in a year than I did in the previous 5 years.

Overall, I’m more comfortable within myself and how I handle things. I’m much more positive which has had a positive impact on the team. There’s a level of excitement about the things we’re doing that wasn’t there before.

The way I communicate and manage staff has also improved. I feel much more comfortable setting my expectations and having honest discussions with people about their performance. It’s helped me to listen more, be calm and constructive. It’s also helped me let go and let people do things their own way. It’s amazing what happens when you empower people.
