Mick Martin


Mick is a proud Koori man from Victoria. He began his participation in the business sector in the 1980’s working for the Australian Trade Commission. Since then he has worked with Indigenous Communities in NSW, NT and Queensland in a variety of academic, community development and business development roles.
Career Highlights
  • Assisted in the establishment of the Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian People at Southern Cross University teaching contemporary Indigenous legal issues, specialising in criminal justice, land and International Indigenous issues.
  • Held the role of Head of School for several years.
  • 6 years teaching business at the Australian Catholic University, working predominantly with Indigenous students to support the development of business leadership skills.
  • Delivered cultural awareness training in multiple organisations including court staff and university lecturers.
  • Visiting international lecturer in Canada, Japan, US, New Zealand and Peru.
  • Guest Lecturer on Peaceboat from 2006 - 2009. Peaceboat originated in Japan. Peaceboat ran an educational program focussed on building global cross-cultural awareness.
  • Delivered the 52nd Anniversary Lecture of the Declaration of Human Rights in Hiroshima Japan.
  • Developed governance training in response to the CATSI Act for TAFE NSW.
  • Recognised as a Governance Champion in TAFE NSW.
  • 15 years working in a number of not-for profit Indigenous community based organisations as a consultant manager to support them in developing governance and operational structures. This included employment services and community services organisations, sporting clubs and the national Indigenous newspaper, Koori Mail.
  • 6 years as chairperson and director in a number of not-for profit Indigenous community based organisations.
  • Worked with the stolen wages case in QLD providing research and culturally appropriate support for applicants.
  • Wrote a number of articles on indigenous legal issues and co-edited a book on Indigenous people and the law

  • 20+ years as an academic at several Australian universities including Southern Cross and the Australian Catholic University.
  • 6 years+ delivering training in Certificate IV and Diploma in Governance, with TAFE NSW.
